Before the game starts

Before you start playing Texas Hold’em you must understand that there are some rules that you absolutely need to know. The first rule is that the game begins with two forced bets from the first two players positioned left to the dealer. These bets are known as the “blinds”. The big blind is placed by the player who is located at the second place on the left side from the dealer. The small blind is placed by the player left of the dealer button. When the blinds are placed, this is a sign that the game will begin and that every player gets two cards face down.

The start of the Texas Hold’em game

Now that all players have received the two cards, the next step is that the player left of the big blind starts acting. This player is the first to decide what to do. The player can choose from one of the following actions: calling the bet, raising the stakes or throwing away the cards meaning no longer participating and therefore no longer risking a loss of money. The betting continues in a clockwise direction. If the round has finished, then three cards are placed face up on the table. This is called the ‘flop’.

Going on to the next round

The flop can be used in combination with the cards from the players hand, in order to make the best combination of five cards. The round now continues with the player on the left side of the dealer, after which the betting continues in a clockwise direction. Once this round is played, the dealer deals the fourth ‘open’ card on the table. This card is called the ‘turn’ card. After the turn card a new betting round takes place.

The conclusion of the round

The fifth and final card is dealt after the betting round for the fourth card has finished. This card is also called the ‘river’ card. A final betting round follows, after which the players show their cards. The player with the best combination of five cards wins the pot. This combination can be made out of the five cards on the ‘board’ and the two cards face down. When the cards on the board turn out to form the best combination, all players still in the hand chop the pot. The pot is thus divided evenly between the number of players. These are the basic rules for playing Texas Hold’em Poker. The next step is to master the different strategies of the game.
